The Nine Divines of Skyrim

So as I’ve been playing Skyrim, I’ve been getting more and more involved in the lore of everything and how it could relate to pop culture witchcraft. Since video games, movie and book pantheons are totally open to work with and a lot easier to access for most witches. I’ve seen lots of Skyrim magic posts, and have made a few myself, but never any really related to the deities of Skyrim and how they could be applied to someone’s practice. So, here is a list of the nine divines and their associations. I’ll be doing a post for the Daedra separately.

Spoonie Witchcraft: Doing Magic with a Chronic Illness

Now, I know that several really well know bloggers have done posts on Spoonie Witchcraft, but I wanted to do my own just to kind of interject my own personal experiences and my ideas/spells and such.

The Spoon Theory//

http://me-pedia.org/images/9/99/Spoon-theory.jpg

Who is a Spoonie?

A Spoonie is someone whose illness interferes with their ability to function on a day to day level.  Those of us with chronic illnesses, mental or physical, that sometimes, oftentimes do not have the energy to perform magical spells or rituals. An example of people who may identify as Spoonies are those with neurodivergencies (Ex. Autism, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, DID, BPD, etc) and those with chronic physical illnesses (Ex. Autism, Fibromyalga, Hypothyroidism, Endometriosis, Cancer, Chronic Fatique Syndrome, Chrohns, etc).

Spoon Levels:

Critical: One to no spoons. No energy to do anything. Can barely get out of bed.

Low: Two or three spoons. Can do basic daily tasks such as showering and getting dressed but anything else is a desperate struggle. This is where I live most of the time.

Average: Four spoons. Doing fine, energy levels are tolerable. Can accomplish daily tasks with less difficulty.

Lots of spooons!: Spoon levels at maximum! Completing big tasks such as work, doctors visits, phone calls, paying bills and such comes easily. I can’t even remember the last time I had max spoons lmao.

Spoon Levels and Magic//

Critical Spoons: No magic today. Use what little spoons you have to eat food and drink water.

  • Daydream. Dreaming in general has a lot of power and needs little to no input on your part.
  • Drink herbal tea or water to cleanse yourself.

Low: Little things, such as maybe drawing a sigil or speaking a phrase to cast a spell. (words have power, after all)

Average: Can practice basic energy work and complete more complex spells such as storm summonings or enchantments.

Lots!: Big rituals can be completed, and its probably a good idea to stockpile and get a lot done while you have the energy. Create a bunch of sigils and enchant a bunch of items that can easily be used with an activation word or trigger for when you are low on spoons.

OneTreePlanted, What it is, and Why Witches Should Care.

So it has occurred to me that I don’t think enough people know about OneTreePlanted. Why aren’t other witches gushing about this charity? Probably just because they don’t know how awesome it is.

So, here we go, my pitch for OTP.

This would be an especially useful resource for any witches who work with earth, or who involve land spirits in their practice at all. Want to make an offering to an earth deity? Donating to OTP is a safe and affordable way to do it.

You have witchy friends with birthdays or want to get a meaningful gift for them for a holiday? You can buy a tree as a gift and, again, *its one single dollar* How cool is that?

With all the horrible things happening involving gag orders on the EPA and the silencing of climate change advocates, if you want to take action to help save the planet, but don’t have a lot of means or energy to do so, this is the charity for you.

Stimmy Ideas for Neurodivergent Witches

This is an ongoing post and I will add videos as I make them! 🙂

Before we get into the video resources for sensory crafts, I wanted to share some of my stimmy tips!

I am a Neurodivergent witch (depression-anxiety-ptsd-dissociation), and my main stims are sensory toys, chewing my nails (I’m currently trying to switch from this to using chewelry because my intestinal lining has been damaged by the decade and a half of nail chewing), picking at my nails, rocking, bouncing my leg violently, tapping my feet, pulling/messing with my hair and pacing.

So these are just my personal tips on how to combine magic with stimming!

  • Enchant your stims. To do this, just give each stim an individual task. For example, when I rock back and forth I associate that with astral traveling. When I bounce my leg, I am grounding and shaking off excess energy. When I pace, I am raising energy. The potential for this is pretty much limitless, and all you have to do is tell yourself, “When I ____, it will ____.”
  • Use astral travel to help you cope with dissociation or anxiety. Building mindscapes, astral projecting and astral meditations have been helping me to cope with my dissociation for nearly twenty years.
  • Use energy work to help with anxiety and depression. Even just sitting there and breathing deeply and feeling energy flow through you can help. I like to make energy balls and then send them off with different ‘jobs’ to do (this is how I cast spells). I find that doing this and using deep breathing techniques really calms me down, helps me feel in control and helps me to feel like I have a purpose.
  • Use shadow work to help you confront and heal from traumas or PTSD. This one may be something you do very rarely (I usually average about one Shadow a year…at the most) because it can be VERY exhausting, but I really do always feel good afterwards and it has helped me to heal from quite a few emotional traumas.
  • Cultivate an emotionally and mentally rewarding witchy hobby. It could be anything from drawing sigils, growing and caring for a potted plant, collecting crystals to learning to make slime or sensory toys. Find something you enjoy that is not a very demanding task, something that can relax you and something that makes you happy.
  • Make small goals for yourself and reward yourself when you meet it. It can be anything. Get out of bed or take a shower or go get groceries. This isn’t necessarily a magic-related tip, but it really helps my depression.

Okay! On with the main part of the post! The hyperlinks will take you to my DIY/Stimming videos on youtube so you can make it yourself, or you can check out my etsy shop here to check out my current selection available for purchase!

Lord of the Rings Magic Masterpost

So, I first read/watched The Lord of the Rings when I was around ten years old. I have been in love with the story ever since. Many of these spells inspired by the movies/books are to be sung. Ill include video links so you can listen along! They are categorized by [Spell Name] (Purpose-Format).

  • Not All Who Wander (Hope/Peace-Spoken Word)
    • A spoken word poem spell to help you find a sense of hope and peace. Recite aloud to yourself while imagining each word creating a beautiful wisp of clouds as it leaves your lips.
    • “All that is gold does not glitter,
      Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
      A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

  • You Shall Not Pass! (Protection-Ward)
    • To quickly summon a very strong shield of energy around you to protect you from negative energy or spirits.
    • Take a deep breath. Visualize yourself surrounded by a bright blue and white light.
    • Feel energy flow up through your spine, down you arms, to your palms.
    • Create an energy ball. Slowly expand it until it completely surrounds you, creating what you visualized earlier. Feel it. It is strong, solid, unbreakable.
    • Say the phrase, “You shall not pass.” to complete the ward and seal it into place.
  • The Light of Earendil (Hope-Vial/Jar)
    • A spell vial to bring you light and hope when everything seems hopeless.
    • Ingredients: Small vial/jar, blue and silver glitter, blue glitter glue, full moon water.
      • “I give you the light of Earendil, our most beloved star.
      • May it be a light for you in dark places, when all other lights go out.”
  • I am No Man! (Confidence-Enchantment)
    • To enchant a hair tie or clip to give you a boost of confidence when you remove it.
    • Take your favorite hair accessory and hold it in your palm.
    • Focus on a time when you felt the most powerful. When you felt really confident in yourself.
    • Channel a burst of energy from your heart down to your hands and into the tie.
  • Houses of Healing (Love-Song)
    • To be used as a love spell to instill or bring forward underlying feelings of longing in a person.
    • “With a sigh, you turn away
      With a deepening heart
      No words to say
      You will find
      That the world has changed
      Forever
      The trees are now turning
      From green to gold
      The sun is now fading
      I wish I could
      Hold you closer.”
  • All Shall Fade (Curse-Song)
    • Use this as a curse to make your subject’s self esteem wither away.
    • “Home is behind the world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight.
      Mist and shadow
      Cloud and shade
      All shall fade
      All shall fade”
  • Not All Tears are an Evil (Emotional Balance-Vial/Jar)
    • Use this to help bring emotional balance and harmony, and to help us realize crying is healthy.
    • Ingredients: Vial/Jar, Tears, New Moon Water, Sea Salt, Rose Quartz gemstone bead, White Glitter.
    • “I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.”
  • What to Do with the Time that is Given to You (Ambition/Perseverance-Writing)
    • This is a spell to help you persevere through a hard time and find hope for the future.
    • Ingredients: Paper, Pen.
    • Think about the thing that has been affecting you lately. Cry about it if you need to. You don’t have to be okay with it, accept it or even move on from it. Just think about it.
    • Now, on your paper, write five things you want to do in the future. It can be anything from eating ice cream to traveling to a place you have always wanted to travel to.
    • As you write, focus on those things. If you don’t get out of bed tomorrow, you won’t get to do those things. Let your emotions be channeled from the pen to the paper. Let it flow, let it out. You can write more than five things, if you want. Or, if you can’t think of five, just write one or two.
    • Say aloud, “I wish none of this had happened….So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.”
    • Seal your paper up in an envelope. On the front of it, write today’s date and what the date will be a year from now. Open it a year from now and see if you completed anything on your list. If you did, then you have made a good use of your time!
  • Hear My Voice! (Summon-Spoken Word)
    • I really love Sindarin (Elvish), and I think it is great for chants and spells.
    • The purpose of this one is to summon a familiar, entity, or element.
    • The phrase is “Lasto beth nin (Law-stow-beh-th-neen)” and it literally means ‘listen to my voice’ or ‘hear my voice’.
    • So for a spell, you could say, “Come to me the powers of water, lasto beth nin!” Or you could even translate your entire command into Sindarin and use that. So, for example, if I wanted to summon Water, I could say “Tolo nin, rimmo, Lasto beth nin!” Which means “Come waters, flow like a current, hear my voice!”
  • Using Sindarin (Elvish) for Spells (Spoken Words)
    • You can use this website to read dialogue from the movies, which extract individual words and give detailed translations. You can use them to build your own spells!

Animal Talk by Penelope Smith

64540

After reading Animal Speak by Ted Andrews, I was super discouraged. I distanced myself from reading any kind of witchy books that focused on animals because of it. That book was so disgusting and culturally appropriative. I picked this book up because I had heard about the author on the internet. She is an ‘animal therapist’ and instead of magic or witchcraft, her book falls more in line with psychic and telepathic studies. The book covers the history of inter-species telepathic communication and how you yourself can use it to communicate with animals, wild or domestic.

I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. I found no traces of cultural appropriation in this book and it is written in a very non-biased and secular way. The book not only teaches you how to communicate with animals, but also gives you exercises to try and several pages of personal examples from the author involving how to communicate with specific kinds of animals. I really enjoyed it. Smith doesn’t involve religion (I think she mentions her personal beliefs once in one of her personal stories), she doesn’t involve closed cultures, and she explains everything very clearly. I truly believe that after reading this book, with enough practice I will be able to fluently communicate with animals. I’ve always kind of been able to do so to an extent, but it kind of comes and goes. I’m really excited to put the new stuff I learned in this book to the test.

The Witches Cupboard by Anna Zollinger and Bree NicGarran

Image result for the witches cupboard by anna zollinger

I’m FINALLY getting around to purchasing and reviewing Anna and Bree’s books and I thought I would start with their powder recipe book first. Man, as a certified Herbalist, I keep a lot of herbs around but there were a couple ingredients in here that I had to squint my eyes at for a second because I hadn’t heard of anyone using them for a long-long time. Like, Bloodroot. Or Dogbane. Not something you see everyday! And I have to admit, it was a treat. This little book was SO refreshing.

Anna and Bree do a phenomenal job at getting right down to it. There is only one introductory chapter and it covers the different powder bases and methods of use, as well allllllll the safety concerns when preparing/storing/using said powders. The rest of the book, save for the last couple of pages, is recipes. And wow, there are a lot! I am definitely going to be making some of them as soon as I can get my hands on some empty jars. The last few pages of the book are dedicated to resources, references and author biographies. I really enjoy using powders/dirts/salts in my practice (I have a constant supply of black salt, graveyard dirt, goofer dust, cascarilla powder and hot foot powder on hand at any given time) and I’m really happy to finally have found some new recipes to try.

I’m really excited to get their other book, The Sisters Grimmoire, once I have the funds. I really enjoy their simple and to-the-point writing styles. I highly recommend their work to any witches, beginner or seasoned, as I think any kind of witch would find it very educational and inspiring. Well, I’m off to go make some of Bree’s Banishing Powder!

The Un-Spell Book by Mya Om

The Un-Spell Book (Pocket)

I bought this book to brush up on my energy work, and boy howdy, was I right to do so. Mya Om wrote another book called Energy Essentials, I think, that is for witchlings and beginners, but this was her second book, geared more towards intermediate work. Mya Om is a Wiccan witch from , and at first I was a little weary to be reading, yet another, Wiccan-wrote witchcraft book, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. While it does carry quite a few Wicca-esque parts (her ritual examples are very Wiccan), she carries a tone that aims to cater to any kind of witchy reader. Meaning, I guess, that she writes with an open mind, as a witch first and a wiccan second. She also was fairly respectful about the few parts where she did mention chakras. I dislike the use of ‘chakras’ and prefer ‘energy points’, but I’ve learned to kind of pick my battles with witchcraft books.

Overall, the book covers mostly energy work. The first 2 chapters are more introductory stuff, but I still found the exercises useful and the information was definitely something I needed to be reminded of. It covers trigger words, centering, grounding, raising, focus, will, intent, energy, etc. All the basics. The last few chapters cover things like elements, rituals and tools. These were really cool. She gave examples of several kinds of ways to connect with the elements and use different tools in rituals. I found this book to be really helpful. I’ve been having a lot of problems with energy work lately, just because I suffer from severe depression and anxiety, so I have no motivation or energy to do magic, but this book really inspired me to try a few new methods.

If you can ignore the subtle undertones (unless you ARE Wiccan, in which case this is perfect for you), then this book is an extremely useful and definitely something you should read. Even if you are a seasoned witch, the exercises and information are still really good to read over and practice to keep you sharp. I have no real complaints about the book, and I really enjoyed it (again, to my surprise). This is probably the first witchy book about energy work that I’ve ever read that wasn’t completely full of crap or full of overbearing Wiccan views. I will be adding this happily to my witchy bookshelf and will definitely be referring back to it often.
