Spirit Roles

Some spirits may choose or agree to perform a specific job or role in your astral territory or as your companion. Some spirits prefer not to have a specific role, and that’s okay too. Below are my personal categories of spirit roles.

Spirit Roles:

  •  Familiar: helps with magic and witchcraft, spends a lot of time in both physical and astral.
  • Healer: helps with healing their companion as well as other spirits.
  • Teacher: helps mentor their companion as well as other spirits.
  • Gatekeeper: patrols the boundaries of their companions astral territory, helps with protection magic, recharges wards and monitors the borders to make sure no entities or energies with malicious intent get by.
  • Guardian: watches over their companion and guides them down a certain path
  • Muse: helps out with creative endeavors, inspires and motivates their companion.
  • Mate: forms a romantic bond with their companion, is especially close with them, protects and comforts them.

Please note that many spirits may already have chosen a role for themselves, and it is vital that spirits consent to the role they play in your life. It is especially important in regards to being a Mate that the decision must be consensual and occur naturally (just like forming a romantic relationship in the physical plane with another human).

November: 30 Day Astral Challenge

Vi’s 30 Day Astral Challenge

(Above art was painted by me, please don’t remove caption)

Please note that the following is based on my personal journey with the astral and that not everyone finds their way into Elsewhere this way.

Supplies:
•journal
•pen/pencil
•possibly crystals
•possibly a plant

When completed you will know how to:
•meditate
•recreate objects from our plane
•construct an astral home
•create an Anchor that can jump between both this realm and Elsewhere, keep you tethered to reality and help you in your adventures.
•create a thoughtform to act as Gatekeeper of your astral home

1. Sit quietly and inhale for a count five, exhale for a count of five. Practice deep intentional breathing for one minute.

2. Find an ordinary common object like a pencil or rock and study it for 10 seconds. Memorize every detail. Now close your eyes and recreate it in your minds eye/imagination for ten seconds. Open your eyes and look at the object from a different angle for ten seconds. Do this for about two minutes total.

3. Begin keeping a journal of any dreams you may have as well as reflection on daily exercises

4. Either look out a window or go for a walk outside. Pick a natural specimen such as a tree, leaf, cloud, etc and do exercise number 2.

5. Practice intentional deep breathing for five minutes while creating in your minds eye a copy of your favorite food.

6. Doodle/sketch your ‘happy place’ or a location where you feel most at home or at peace with yourself

7. Find a small item with sentimental value to you, such as a ring, crystal, etc and place it in your pillowcase.

8. Hold your sentimental item, which from now on I will call an Anchor, in the palm of your hand and do the recreation exercise. Before bed focus on the copy of your Anchor in your minds eye.

9. Draw your Anchor in your dream journal and make a list of things you would like it to do for you. IE, protection, help you summon a weapon, transform into something useful, wake you up if you are having a nightmare, etc.

10. Name your Anchor. Do intentional breathing with it in the palm of your hand for five minutes.

11. Imagine your ideal happy place in your minds eye. Picture yourself walking through it, being there. What does the air smell like? Is the climate cold or warm? What does the landscape look like? What kind of ecosystem is it? What kind of colors can you see? You reach out and touch your surroundings, what do you feel? Document everything in your journal.

12. Doodle/sketch your dream home/homestead and then recreate it in your minds eye.

13. Build your ideal place in your minds eye, imagine yourself there. Walk around the edges of it, and envision an array of protective and colorful energy flowing out behind you from your footsteps. The energy ebbs and begins to create a flexible and complex barrier that will keep out negative energies and entities. This is your ward, and it will protect your astral home.

14. Bring your Anchor to your astral home and ask it to perform a task.

15. Create a sigil to help you in your astral adventures.

16. Google and read about crystals/gemstones that can help raise psychic awareness, aid in astral travel and that are related to dreams.

17. Pick a favorite of the crystals you read about on day 15 and doodle/draw it in your journal.

18. Google and read about plants that can help with psychic abilities, dreaming and astral travel.

19. Pick a favorite plant and doodle/draw it in your journal.

20. Either obtain a physical specimen of your chosen crystal, or find a good photograph of it and recreate it in your minds eye. Bring it to your astral home.

21. Either obtain a physical specimen of your chosen plant or find a good photograph of it and recreate it in your minds eye. Bring it to your astral home and plant it by your front door.

22. Make a playlist of music that helps you easily enter into deep breathing and be able to access your astral home.

23. Draw/doodle your favorite animal or magical creature.

24. Write a profile for your above doodle. Give it a name, personality, what are its favorite foods and colors, hobbies, likes, dislikes, etc. I’ll call this creature your Gatekeeper from now on.

25. Recreate your Gatekeeper in your minds eye. Imagine them at your astral home, taking their first breath, seeing you and interacting with you. Introduce yourself, share some of your energy with them. Sit down and meditate/practice intentional breathing with them. What are they like? Do they have any behaviors or mannerisms you find notable?

26. Return to your astral home and meet your Gatekeeper again. Ask them politely if they would like to help you in acting as the guardian and protector of your astral home.

27. Go for a walk and see your Gatekeeper walking beside you in your minds eye. Spend time with them.

28. Return to your astral home and check on your plant. Has it grown any?

29. Return to your astral home and walk the boundaries of your territory with your Gatekeeper, repeating Day 12’s exercise to strengthen your wards and teach your Gatekeeper how to do so as well.

30. Remember that Elsewhere is a world of its own with its own inhabitants. Be respectful and polite when venturing outside of your astral territory. Don’t go wandering into someone else’s space without asking permission. Do your own research about the astral plane (there are lots of good resources here on tumblr).

She Who Turns to Love: All About Aphrodite

She Who Turns to Love

I’ve been fairly neglectful towards this website in the last few months due to personal misevents. I got a divorce, ran through two different jobs, but now I find myself again with a purpose. I got accepted and re-enrolled in school (which I start in a few days), and I have a new lover who appreciates me for who I am—mental illnesses and all. About four months ago I formally devoted myself to the Goddess, Aphrodite. I had felt a pull towards her in the last year and finally decided to do something about it. And boy, am I glad I did. Sappho’s Hymn to Aphrodite

Πσάπφ᾽, ἀδίκηει;

Shimmering-throned immortal Aphrodite,
Daughter of Zeus, Enchantress, I implore thee,
Spare me, O queen, this agony and anguish,
Crush not my spirit

Whenever before thou has hearkened to me–
To my voice calling to thee in the distance,
And heeding, thou hast come, leaving thy father’s
Golden dominions,

With chariot yoked to thy fleet-winged coursers,
Fluttering swift pinions over earth’s darkness,
And bringing thee through the infinite, gliding
Downwards from heaven,

Then, soon they arrived and thou, blessed goddess,
With divine contenance smiling, didst ask me
What new woe had befallen me now and why,
Thus I had called the.

What in my mad heart was my greatest desire,
Who was it now that must feel my allurements,
Who was the fair one that must be persuaded,
Who wronged thee Sappho?

For if now she flees, quickly she shall follow
And if she spurns gifts, soon shall she offer them
Yea, if she knows not love, soon shall she feel it
Even reluctant.

Come then, I pray, grant me surcease from sorrow,
Drive away care, I beseech thee, O goddess
Fulfil for me what I yearn to accomplish,
Be thou my ally.

Deity Worship: Working with the Divine

So, here lately I’ve been doing a lot of deity work. I try to keep most of my witchcraft practice pretty secular, but the deity I am devoted to in my religious practices has lately shown interest in becoming involved in my magic.

This is just going to be a basic guide full of suggestions on how to start, maintain and keep a practice with a deity, or deities.

Step 1: Making a Connection

The first step to devoting yourself to a deity or deities is to listen to your heart. Your gut instinct. Is there a specific open pantheon that you feel pulled towards? If there is, go with that. If not, then maybe read up on the different pantheons and go from there. Sometimes being called won’t happen right away, and that’s okay. Sometimes its very subtle, and you really have to pay attention to your surroundings to see what sticks out. It is different for everyone. Something important to remember, however, is that becoming a devotee of a deity is a partnership. Yes, you are ‘serving’ them, but they also must reciprocate and be an active member of the relationship. If at any time you feel uncomfortable, you can easily terminate the partnership and cease to be their devotee. Just like with a human relationship, both parties must be consenting and comfortable with the relationship. Once you have established that a specific pantheon would be right for you, research any deities within that pantheon that you would be interested in working with. If you feel you like or are attracted to one, go from there.

Step 2: Establishing a Partnership

Now that you’ve chosen a deity, you need to figure out whether or not they want to work with you. Again, its a relationship so it has to go both ways. You could do this through meditation, pendulum, tarot, runes, astral travel, etc. If you both feel good about it, its time to write up a contract. This step isn’t necessarily..well, necessary, but I like to do it just to make everything feel official. If you do decide to write up a contract, remember to list what you promise to bring to the relationship, and what you expect for them to bring to the relationship. Also, remember to add ‘if either or both parties should feel uncomfortable or wish to cease the partnership, immediate termination of the contract can take place’ somewhere in there.

Step 3: Maintaining the Relationship

Depending on the deity, the requirements for maintaining the relationship will be different. As their devotee, it is expected of you to make offerings to them on a regular basis. It is between the two of you which kind of offerings they want to receive, and how often they should be presented. Below I have listed just some suggestions for how to strengthen the bond with your deity and maintain that steady flow of communication.

  • Give each deity (if you have more than one) their own journal. Deities do not want to feel like they are competing.
  • Let the deity pick the journal. Go to a store and stand in their notebook/journal aisle. One of the best exercises that I find really helps my deity work is to let the deity choose. So while you are standing in the notebook section, let them choose the journal that you will use for them. This could happen as a simple ‘feeling’ of wanting a certain one, or finding a journal that kind of matches their associations. Like, for Persephone, a journal with flowers on it. Or something like that. Use your intuition.
  • Schedule a time every day in which to spend with your deity.
  • Schedule daily or bi-daily meditation or communication sessions.
  • Schedule offering sessions, whether they are daily or twice a week, etc.
  • Communication methods can be pendulum, tarot cards, rune stones, etc.
  • Fill the beginning of the journal with your research on that specific deity. What is their history like? What kind of mythology and stories are associated with them? Do they have specific colors, seasons, foods, plants, crystals, animals that are used to represent them? How did the priests and priestesses of ancient times worship them? How can you modernize that and incorporate it into your daily practice? Etc.
  • Write down offering ideas.
  • Write down ideas you have for activities you could do to honor or better represent your deity.
  • Write down altar ideas.
  • Make them their own altar. Altar’s can include any number of things, but the general set up that I follow is: an offering bowl, an offering jar filled with an herb or plant associated with them, their own set of prayer beads, their own pendulum, crystals associated with them, a statue or idol of them or that represents them, artwork of them or of something they enjoy (like scenery), a candle with a color/scent related to their associations, incense related to their associations, etc. Again, though, that is just my personal set up. Do whatever feels natural to you.
  • Write letters or prayers to the deity in the journal.
  • Write poetry about or for your deity.
  • Document everything! Their altar set up, ideas you have, any communication session transcriptions, prayers, etc. The journal itself can be seen as an offering to your deity, and they appreciate it when their devotees take the time to gather and keep all interactions recorded in one place.

The Nine Divines of Skyrim

So as I’ve been playing Skyrim, I’ve been getting more and more involved in the lore of everything and how it could relate to pop culture witchcraft. Since video games, movie and book pantheons are totally open to work with and a lot easier to access for most witches. I’ve seen lots of Skyrim magic posts, and have made a few myself, but never any really related to the deities of Skyrim and how they could be applied to someone’s practice. So, here is a list of the nine divines and their associations. I’ll be doing a post for the Daedra separately.

Spoonie Witchcraft: Doing Magic with a Chronic Illness

Now, I know that several really well know bloggers have done posts on Spoonie Witchcraft, but I wanted to do my own just to kind of interject my own personal experiences and my ideas/spells and such.

The Spoon Theory//

http://me-pedia.org/images/9/99/Spoon-theory.jpg

Who is a Spoonie?

A Spoonie is someone whose illness interferes with their ability to function on a day to day level.  Those of us with chronic illnesses, mental or physical, that sometimes, oftentimes do not have the energy to perform magical spells or rituals. An example of people who may identify as Spoonies are those with neurodivergencies (Ex. Autism, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, DID, BPD, etc) and those with chronic physical illnesses (Ex. Autism, Fibromyalga, Hypothyroidism, Endometriosis, Cancer, Chronic Fatique Syndrome, Chrohns, etc).

Spoon Levels:

Critical: One to no spoons. No energy to do anything. Can barely get out of bed.

Low: Two or three spoons. Can do basic daily tasks such as showering and getting dressed but anything else is a desperate struggle. This is where I live most of the time.

Average: Four spoons. Doing fine, energy levels are tolerable. Can accomplish daily tasks with less difficulty.

Lots of spooons!: Spoon levels at maximum! Completing big tasks such as work, doctors visits, phone calls, paying bills and such comes easily. I can’t even remember the last time I had max spoons lmao.

Spoon Levels and Magic//

Critical Spoons: No magic today. Use what little spoons you have to eat food and drink water.

  • Daydream. Dreaming in general has a lot of power and needs little to no input on your part.
  • Drink herbal tea or water to cleanse yourself.

Low: Little things, such as maybe drawing a sigil or speaking a phrase to cast a spell. (words have power, after all)

Average: Can practice basic energy work and complete more complex spells such as storm summonings or enchantments.

Lots!: Big rituals can be completed, and its probably a good idea to stockpile and get a lot done while you have the energy. Create a bunch of sigils and enchant a bunch of items that can easily be used with an activation word or trigger for when you are low on spoons.
